Honeymoon gift ideas: what to give a couple about to travel

Honeymoon gifts sit in an awkward category. Too small and they get lost in the wedding gift pile. Too big and they're hard to bring home. The best ones travel with them.

I run aroā Australia, where I make personalised travel pieces by hand in Sydney. Honeymoon gifts are a steady part of what gets ordered through the site. This is what I'd give.

What couples actually want for a honeymoon gift

A few patterns from a year of helping couples and gifters work this out.

They want something they'd use on the trip. Not after, on it. They want one beautiful piece, not three small things. They want the personalisation to mean something. New initials. Her name. His name. The honeymoon date. They don't want it to feel separate from the wedding. The gift should sit beside the wedding gift list, not compete with it.

A matching passport cover set

The honeymoon classic. Two passport covers, both hand embossed, often in matching colours but with different personalisation.

Through aroā, the most common combination is one set in ivory and one in peach, both with gold foil. Personalisation is usually first names or initials.

The piece they'll use on every trip after, not just the honeymoon.

A pre-paid experience for the honeymoon

If you'd rather give something that doesn't sit in a drawer, gift an experience instead of a thing. A pre-paid dinner at the restaurant they're already going to. A spa appointment built into the trip. A driver to the airport on the morning.

Pair it with a small personalised piece (a single luggage tag, a passport cover) so they have something to open.

What I would gently leave off the list

Things that don't travel well, or that they won't use.

A heavy gift basket. They can't take it on the plane. Generic luggage. They've already picked their suitcase. Anything fragile. The packing is enough stress. Subscription boxes that arrive while they're away.

How to time the honeymoon gift

A few notes from someone who makes a lot of these.

Give the gift the week before the wedding, not the day of. The wedding day is too much. Production for personalised pieces takes 2 to 5 business days. Order at least three weeks before the wedding to be safe. If you're gifting in a group, agree on one piece, not multiple. One beautiful set means more than four small things.

The quick version for your group chat

If you're the parents: matching passport set in ivory and peach. If you're the bridesmaids or groomsmen, gifting as a group: a passport set plus a pre-paid dinner. If you're a close friend: single passport cover with her new initials. If you're a more distant guest: single luggage tag, hand embossed.
